The weather has been pretty suspicious lately rapidly moving from random and sporadic thunderstorms to hail falling from the sky to tornadoes touching down. Sometimes the weather forecast seems to be inconsistent, yet most of the time, we are still able to discern what’s coming by way of satellites and maps. And that reminds me of the words of Jesus as He rebukes the religious folk for asking for a sign from heaven. He sharply says, “Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times” (Matthew 16:3).So how is it we can discern the face of the sky, but not discern the face of the times we live in? I have to share what’s on my heart because I really believe a storm is brewing off in the horizon that is going to come unannounced. No “Doppler radar” will pick up on it, nor will the man-made weather instruments be able to predict it. It’s coming and only those who have welcomed Jesus into the home of their hearts will find His life as the shelter from this storm. And like Enoch in the Bible, who never died because the Lord took him straight up to heaven, so it will also be for those who walk with the Lord upon Jesus’ return.Do you know the world event that followed Enoch being raptured to heaven? (It is found in Genesis 5). It was historically and biblically known as the Flood—beginning in Genesis 6 and coming to its climax in chapter 7. The Bible also talks about a “rapture” which happens before a tribulation in the “end times” and it is preceded by strange “weather and wars.”The Bible is tried and true and its layout is divinely designed to get us to discern the climate of the time--and our cultural temperature is cause for concern. We are no longer one nation under God. We’ve put God under us, and you know what, He let us. He knew the direction we would go when we decided to leave Him. So, for God, it’s not about us inviting Him back into “our story” so we can be a great country of glory again, but rather Him relentlessly inviting us to get with the history of His story. Jesus foretold of the “weather” we currently live in, not to prepare us for the coming flood, but to keep us from the coming “flood”. You see, the sender of the storm is also the only One who can save us from the storm. Don’t look to the sky for the breaking weather; look much higher before the weather breaks. Because I tell you the truth, the sky is about to break!
