the DAILY FEAST of GRATEFULNESS

I don’t know about you, but I still feel a bit stuffed from my tour of Thanksgiving festivities last week. From my in-laws house for a late lunch smorgasbord, to my parents for a buffet-style dinner, and yes, all in the same day! Needless to say, Sarah and I departed home with enough leftovers to last through the week.  For that I am grateful.Homes across America probably looked pretty much the same as we all passionately pursued the “stuffing” that makes up Thanksgiving.  I mean everyone pursues the spirit of Thanksgiving differently, as some use it as a time for kicking back and watching football, others for sitting around a table and catching up with family, and still others may just eat all day and dessert all night. Either way, Thanksgiving is a day where people come together under the umbrella of holiday to enjoy food and family. And as yet another Thanksgiving holiday has passed, the question begs:  Should the spirit of “giving thanks” be relegated to one specific day?  Shouldn’t gratefulness be the feast of our hearts everyday? The Bible says that “in everything” we should give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for us. In every single day--give thanks. In every different situation--give thanks. In every trial and in every triumph--give thanks. We ought to pursue gratefulness with the same passion that we engage to feasting on Thanksgiving.  And here’s the reason why: Because if we are not intentionally giving thanks each day then the hustle and bustle of life will defnitely get in the way.  And before we know it, the New Year hits us head on, leaving no room to reflect on the gratefulness of where we have been and what we have done in between holidays. For the follower of Jesus, it ought not be. I mean, gratefulness should characterize our lives from one day to the next, regardless of what the day may bring. I know certain days may bring trouble and nothing to be thankful for, but what the day brings us should never dictate what we bring the day. We need to possess an attitude of gratitude; because lives that are filled up with the “stuffing” of gratefulness leave no room for any side dishes of bitterness and past regrets.
